The 1903 silent film“Alice in Wonderland”, directed by Percy Stow and Cecil M. Hepworth, is the earliest known cinematic adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s beloved novel. Despite its short runtime of just over ten minutes, this pioneering British film captures the essence of Alice’s whimsical journey through a dreamlike world filled with bizarre and fantastical creatures.

The story follows Alice, a curious young girl, who spots a hurried White Rabbit and follows him down a rabbit hole into Wonderland. There, she experiences a series of surreal and magical encounters. She grows and shrinks in size after consuming mysterious food and drink, meets peculiar characters such as the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Queen of Hearts, and finds herself caught in a world where logic is turned upside down. The film, though brief, conveys the spirit of Carroll’s novel through innovative visual effects and stage-like set designs, bringing to life iconic moments such as Alice’s transformation in size and the Queen’s dramatic pursuit.

Due to the limitations of early cinema, Alice in Wonderland relies on static camera shots and theatrical performances, yet its special effects, including jump cuts and dissolves, were groundbreaking for the time. The film also stands as a historical treasure, offering a glimpse into the infancy of narrative filmmaking.
