Frankenstein

The 1910 silent film Frankenstein, directed by J. Searle Dawley and produced by the Edison Manufacturing Company, is the earliest known cinematic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking 1818 novel. This short but atmospheric film condenses the essence of the story into a brief yet haunting narrative, blending early horror with the dramatic flair of silent-era filmmaking.

The film follows Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet reckless scientist who seeks to unlock the secrets of life. Obsessed with his macabre experiment, he assembles a living being through unnatural means. Unlike later adaptations, where the creature is built from human remains, this version presents its creation as an alchemical process, in which Frankenstein concocts a bubbling mixture that gives rise to a grotesque, malformed being. The monster, more of a supernatural entity than a patchwork of body parts, emerges in a terrifying birth sequence that remains one of the film’s most memorable moments.

As Frankenstein recoils in horror from his creation, he soon finds himself haunted by it. The creature, a distorted reflection of his own dark ambitions, relentlessly pursues him, forcing the scientist to confront his own moral failings. In a climactic moment, the monster seemingly vanishes, dissolving into Frankenstein’s mirror image – suggesting that the true horror lies within his own soul.
