In the opulent yet tense court of late 16th-century France, power struggles threaten to tear the nation apart. The ambitious and charismatic Duke of Guise has risen to prominence, wielding enormous influence over the Catholic League and positioning himself as a rival to the crown itself. His growing popularity alarms King Henri III, who sees Guise as a dangerous threat to his authority and the fragile stability of his reign.

Determined to eliminate his rival once and for all, the king hatches a ruthless plan. He invites the unsuspecting duke to his private chambers under the guise of reconciliation, all the while laying a deadly trap.

As the duke enters, surrounded by courtiers and guards, the air is thick with suspicion and veiled hostility. Without warning, Henri’s assassins descend, brutally murdering the duke in cold blood. The shocking act sends ripples of fear and outrage through the court and the country, igniting further political turmoil and cementing Henri’s legacy as a desperate and calculating monarch.

“L’assassinat du duc de Guise” is a landmark in cinematic history – one of the first narrative films to use an original score, composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, and to treat historical drama with serious artistry. With a script by esteemed playwright Henri Lavedan, and co-directed by André Calmettes and Charles Le Bargy, the film elevates early cinema into a medium capable of exploring weighty themes of power, betrayal, and the human cost of ambition.

Combining elegant staging, dramatic performances, and a groundbreaking integration of music and image, the film captures a pivotal moment in French history with operatic grandeur, offering a chilling meditation on the corrupting nature of politics and the fragility of trust.
